#RECORDING WITH TASCAM 424 MKII MANUAL#
Download your manual and look for the signal path pages.Up for auction is a nice Tascam 424 MKII comes with an attached Power Cable. That will require some gear to compare each channel and track problem that way. If that doesn't fix it, then the 246 service manual had the signal path for both record and play functions for each channel. It's time consuming and requires careful removal of a master board that links the buses and some desoldering. The only way to properly clean everything is remove each bus (including the pb/monitor sections), and then carefully clean with Deoxit. There are a ton of switches and pots in the pb/rec signal path for each channel. If you swap channels 1 and 3 and find the problem does not move, then you know the head is good and the problem is electronic or dirty pot/switch somewhere in the signal path of channel 3Īlso check all the plugs going into the various boards, they can come loose over time, in shipping, etc. If it's similar, there are 4 sets of wires with plugs at the end going from the head to the PB/ Rec board. I have not worked on that model, but have worked on two 246 units. Any help trouble shooting the problem would be hugely helpful and greatly appreciated! Seems like the problem is in that Record/Playback channel, but I suppose it could lie in the head itself as well. When the VR is set to that spot channel 3 still won't record, playback is still quiet and interestingly the channel 3 VU stops registering any level when a tape is playing although I'm able to hear audio. There is a "sweet spot" where the popping clicking and buzzing isn't produced on play back. The only one that seems to make a difference is the PlayBack Level VR. I have started to look into the the Record/Playback channel inside the unit, and although I know its a tad risky I've been fiddling with the variable resistors in that circuit. All mixer functions (EQ, panning) seem to be working on track three though so I don't think the problem lies in that circuitry.

Maxing out the master fader and track 3 fader will produce an audible signal but at that point it is heavily distorted by pops, clicks and buzzing. When I record to track 2 then flip the tape over track three will play back (in reverse of course) but the playback is very quiet. I've got my fingers crossed that someone here can help me out with an issue I'm having with a 424 mkIII portastudio.
